Customer Rating: Summary: It's about time! Comment: It's about time this classic comes out on dvd. My family has worn out countless VHS versions over the years. In 1988 I was in 5th grade and my father put on a huge charity event in the Chicago area where Petula was the entertainment for the evening. Not only did my family get to meet her but my sister along with my mother and father got to have breakfast with Petula in her hotel room the next morning. I have the pictures of my sister and I wearing Groucho Marx glasses with her (we even talked her into wearing them for one of the pictures). Anyway, she sang many songs from this classic movie that night and they were just as amazing in person as they were in the movie. It's too bad that Hollywood has lost the ability to make quality films anymore but if you are like me and looking for something classy, fun and most importantly entertaining then pre-order this gem right now!
Customer Rating: Summary: Brilliant news to musical lovers Comment: I just could not believe after all these years, a DVD of Goodbye Mr. Chips is going to be released. Ever since i watched the movie back in 1969 in Hong Kong, the movie and the songs were in my minds always. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a boarding school two years later and experienced the life of boarding school. The two songs of "You and I" and "Walk through the world with me" are just pure magic and i wish the music producers could give much more credits to these two songs. I certainly would recommend to old and new lovers to have these two songs downloaded in their MP3 and listen to these two songs while walking down the river Thames in the evening with your beloved one! I am sure you will never forget this experience. Remember to choose the bridge with the blue neon lights too!
Beautiful movie and singing by Petula Clark. You are absolutely magic.

Customer Rating: Summary: ONE OF MY FAVORITES Comment: Ive been waiting such a long time for this movie to come out on dvd. It wasn't the best musical but I found it very entertaining and Peter o"Toole is especially wonderful as always. Petula Clark is fine and touching and love her singing.
Customer Rating: Summary: Goodbye, Mr. Chips with Peter O'Toole Comment: This is a most wonderful, musical remake of the original 1939 film. Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark are superb and give most touching performances. Why is this movie not available on DVD? So many inferior films on DVD from this period and other eras are available and I can't help wonder how such a beautiful film as this be overlooked?
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful Comment: That this is not available in DVD is incomprehensible. Who still has a VHS??? The last time I saw this I cryed, grown up man that I am and was ,next to my date at a retro movie house. "A" performances by all, music is a embellishment to the story, not a distraction. and makes you wish Petulia Clark made more movies, sad I can't see it again till they make the DVD....

Robert Donat won an Oscar for his portrayal of the humble British don in the 1939 film Goodbye, Mr. Chips--and Peter O'Toole was nominated for his version of the role in this lackluster musical (he, along with Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight of Midnight Cowboy, lost to John Wayne in True Grit). O'Toole is affecting as the shy English schoolteacher at a private boys' school who is brought out of his shell by the love of a good woman, then goes on to become a teaching legend after her tragic death. But the idea of turning this touching tale into a musical (with totally forgettable songs by John Williams and Leslie Bricusse) was almost as wrong-headed as having O'Toole do his own singing--or as casting singer Petula Clark as his wife. --Marshall Fine
