Summary: Too Depressing
Comment: This book is just too depressing. I liked Plain Truth but this one didn't have anything happy in it.

Summary: Another Horrible Ending
Comment: I found this book intensely, compulsively readable, couldn't put it down, then found myself feeling cheated once we got to the end and the Picoult twist was revealed. (*SPOILERS*) I have to say, by the end of the novel, I could not stand the character of Josie, and the fact that she for some inexplicable reason shot her boyfriend makes her completely despicable. I'm starting to wonder if Piccoult has a problem with teenage girls-I do note that her interviews state she is the mother of SONS-because she tends to paint all her adolescent female characters as completely unstable, irrational, and manipulative. I've read many of her novels and see this as a trend with her-from THE TENTH CIRCLE to SALEM FALLS to PLAIN TRUTH to THE PACT. Her female characters are so interchangeable they could all be the same person, too, in every book. What is with her demonization of girls? Did some evil girl accuse one of her sons of rape or something? You have to wonder, and I find it interesting that she's categorized as chick lit, her writing is the antithesis of feminist.

Summary: a very engaging read on a very tough subject
Comment: This was my first book by Jodi Picoult but had heard about her writing style. The subject matter was an extremely difficult one - and then is revealed through the viewpoint of all of the characters - both those that you are rooting for and even the "villains," for whom you end up somehow feeling great sympathy. Very well done and I've gone on to read other books by her as a result.

Summary: very good yet very stereotypical at the same time
Comment: I love Jodi Picoult's books. She is such a good writer, but she can also be very stereotypical at times too. I am in high school and I can tell you that shy people do blend in, and unless they are jerks then they do not get picked on as much as Peter in this book by a long shot. Also, popular people do have true friends but they just tend to think about themselves more. Sometimes the things that the book portrayed about teenage life was right on and sometimes it was just not right at all.
But other than those things the book is amazing. You will fall in love with just about every character and the ending is *spoiler-ish* very very sad and very shocking but almost expected, I love it.

Editorial Reviews:

In nineteen minutes, you can mow the front lawn, color your hair, watch a third of a hockey game. In nineteen minutes, you can bake scones or get a tooth filled by a dentist; you can fold laundry for a family of five....In nineteen minutes, you can stop the world, or you can just jump off it. In nineteen minutes, you can get revenge.

Sterling is a small, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens -- until the day its complacency is shattered by a shocking act of violence. In the aftermath, the town's residents must not only seek justice in order to begin healing but also come to terms with the role they played in the tragedy. For them, the lines between truth and fiction, right and wrong, insider and outsider have been obscured forever. Josie Cormier, the teenage daughter of the judge sitting on the case, could be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened in front of her own eyes. And as the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show, destroying the closest of friendships and families.

Nineteen Minutes is New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult's most raw, honest, and important novel yet. Told with the straightforward style for which she has become known, it asks simple questions that have no easy answers: Can your own child become a mystery to you? What does it mean to be different in our society? Is it ever okay for a victim to strike back? And who -- if anyone -- has the right to judge someone else?
